When French Belote arrived in Soviet Armenia in the 1950s with repatriates, local players loved the trick-taking mechanics, but hated the luck of the draw. In standard French Belote, the deck dictates the trump.

Armenian card masters wanted psychology, bluffing, and guts. So they invented the Bazar (Open Auction): giving players the courage to bid 44, raise to 70, or dare to play No-Trump (Չոր) with double the stakes. That single change turned a casual game into a high-stakes psychological battlefield.
